When the factory I worked at for the over 15 years closed two years ago I had no idea what I was going to do for a job. I didn’t have a college degree and had little training in anything except what I was doing at the factory. I knew I had to find a skill that could be utilized in the business world in which I could use to get my foot in the door. I decided I would get some training in accounting software such as Quickbooks, in order to get a job with a firm doing accounting work or payroll work. I had no idea how far this training was going to take me.
I began taking classes at a vocational school and quickly got the hang of using the accounting software programs the school was using. After receiving my certificate in one class I decided to keep on going and learn as much as I could. I got certificates of Microsoft Office, Excel, MAS90 software, and learned the fine details of doing payroll accounting.
After 18 months of school I received a host of certificates on the most updated accounting software programs available. I typed up my resume and began applying at many different companies. It didn’t take long before I was called in for an interview and then offered a full time position for a rather large company that employee over 500 people. I started out making more money than what I had made at the factory where I had worked for 15 years. Taking classes changed my life and landed me an excellent job as well as gave me top notch skills that will always be in demand.
Every business, no matter what it is, needs somebody to do payroll or accounting work. Learning the most update business tools is a necessity if you want to find work as an accountant or payroll clerk. The software used in today’s offices is very specialized for the job it needs to do and learning that software is actually quite easy. I know if I can do it anybody can. When I was in high school we didn’t have access to computer education like kids do today so I was really out of the loop as far as computer knowledge goes. But I was able to catch on quick and the software I was trained on was very easy to understand and use. I’m thankful to have this skill because I know I will never be out of work again.
